Boat Maintenance Schedule: What to Do and When

Regular maintenance is the difference between a reliable boat and an expensive headache. Here's what to do and when, organized by frequency.

Before every trip

Check oil level, coolant level, and belt tension. Inspect bilge for water. Test bilge pump. Check battery voltage. Verify nav lights work. Confirm drain plug is installed. Check fuel level and water separator.

Monthly (during season)

Inspect and clean battery terminals. Check all hose clamps for tightness. Lubricate steering cables and throttle/shift cables. Inspect propeller for damage. Check anchor rode for chafe. Clean and treat vinyl/canvas.

Annually

Change engine oil and filter. Replace fuel/water separator filter. Replace impeller (raw water pump). Inspect and replace anodes (zincs). Bottom paint (hauled out). Inspect through-hulls and seacocks. Service steering system. Check/replace fire extinguishers. Inspect safety equipment. Tune rigging (sailboats). Service winches (sailboats).

Every 2-3 years

Replace fuel lines and hoses. Flush and service cooling system. Inspect exhaust system (risers on gas engines). Rebuild raw water pump. Service head (marine toilet). Replace standing rigging (sailboats, every 10 years). Replace canvas/enclosures as needed.
